Bears Meeting
Sun, May 15 2011 08:09
L to R : Paul Porter (Chairman of The Bears), Andy Thomas and Ray Murray of Glaze.
Bears Of Cowbridge.
Bears members who heard the story of Glaze from founder Ray Murray and Senior Urological surgeon Andy Thomas were so impressed by the progress that they responded with a spontaneous collection of more than £268 toward the cause.
With a new website and a promotional re-launch under way the charity is intending to put more cash behind both forms of treatment and is in the throes of forming sponsorship deals with the Welsh Rugby Union for the Autumn Rugby Internationals as one of its major initiatives.
Andy Thomas explained, “Cancerous conditions of the prostate lead to one of the highest mortality rates in Britain amongst men, second only to heart disease in accounting for more than 10,000 deaths annually..
“We have now successfully introduced Cryo-therapy in South Wales to tackle that problem to provide another link in the chain of centres of excellence across Britain so the work we are doing here is vital if we are to bring down mortality rates generally.
“With the right will and attitude I believe we can achieve so much more. Treatments are improving rapidly in areas where there were none before and we have reason to believe that cryo-therapy, introduced with the financial aid of Glaze, can be instrumental in our fight against this disease which destroys so many lives, “ he added.

Co-op Cycle Marathon
Sun, May 15 2011 08:06
Co-op Cycle Marathon :
Community retailer The Co-operative welcomed a team of cyclists to 13 of its stores, including Kilgetty, which is on a mission to increase awareness of prostate cancer and raise funds for Welsh charity Glaze (Green Light Lazer Equipment).
The cyclists, who include former Welsh rugby international Ray Giles and Martin James, fitness coach of the now disbanded Welsh Youth Rugby Union, as well as surgeons and doctors, will begin their 72-hour whistlestop tour of the 13 Co-operative stores at Kilgetty on Friday (17 April), picking up pledges and donations along the way.
They will then cycle to Co-operative stores in Whitland, St Clears, Cross Hands, Llandeilo, Llandovery Rugby Club, Brecon, Pentrebach, Taffs Well, Cardiff Rugby Club, Penarth, Barry, Pencoed, Bridgend and Pyle before finishing at Kenfig Hill Rugby Club on Sunday, 19 April. The team will be followed on their journey by a Co-operative van which will carry food supplies and water.
Established in December 2003, Glaze’s fundraising efforts help buy essential equipment for the treatment of prostate conditions and it is now hoping to raise more than £160,000 to create a cryo-therapy centre of excellence at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend – the first of its kind in Wales.
Founder Ray Murray said: “This will be a very significant development for Wales because, for the first time, men with tumours who might otherwise have to travel to England for treatment can be dealt with nearer home.
“Prostate cancer takes thousands of lives in Britain annually and is particularly virulent because it can spread to other vital organs of the body. Treatment in its early stages by cryo-therapy offers hope of significant improvement in terms of life expectancy.”
Operations manager for The Co-operative, Gary Chappell added: “This cycle will help Glaze raise funds for essential equipment and our staff are looking forward to welcoming the cyclists to our stores and giving them lots of encouragement along the way.”

Southerndown Success
Sun, May 15 2011 08:06
Former Patients Fund raising
for GLAZE at Southerndown Golf Club :
Thanks to the inventive support of two former captains the men's prostate cancer charity Glaze profited by more than £6,200 at an Open Charity Golf Day at Southerndown golf club.
Glazed chairman, Ray Murray recollected the event “on one of the brightest, driest and calmest days” of the autumn season.
Southerndown's rolling fairways and elevated greens were a tough challenge for the 150 competitors who took part and darkness had all but fallen when the last teams were driving off the 18th tee.
Ray Murray said, “It was quite one of the best days the charity has had, raising more that £6,000 for our cause.
“Our absolute thanks go to the club's two former captains. Stan Harding and Llew Nicholas who set it all up for us. It was a fabulous effort that turned out to be one of the best fund-raisers we've ever had.
“ Stan has been a beneficiary of Green Light Lazer treatment in the past and this was their expression of thanks for the professional care they received.
“They have brilliant organisational skills, which were amply demonstrated on the day, turning it into a resounding success and in so doing contributing massively to our cause which is making so much progress in South Wales in the areas of benign and now active prostate cancer conditions.”
The whole event was extremely well supported by Southerdown Golf Club members, with Nathaniel Car Sales as the main sponsors offering a Chevrolet Captiva 4WD for a hole-in-one on the 10th, unfortunately not claimed on this occasion.
The ladies section of Southerndown Golf Club busied themselves throughout the day helping with the organisation of halfway house refreshments and photographs of all the teams.
Ray Murray added, “The cash raised by Stan and Llew, especially during these difficult financial times, was a testimonial to their supreme skills. No one could have done it better.”

The CORUS Treatment
Sun, May 15 2011 08:05
The CORUS Treatment for Glaze :
When the Morfa Coke Ovens and its contractors clashed in a football match one damp afternoon, who would have thought the players would all emerge smiley faced? It’s because every player was competing to raise money for GLAZE Charity Trust.
GLAZE was founded in 2003 to create funds to purchase equipment for the treatment of benign prostate conditions, in which almost 500 male patients have since been treated at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend. GLAZE has now spread its wings to bring to Wales for the first time a new treatment for malignant cancer in the prostate known as ‘Cryotherapy’. The £513 will go straight to the front line and contribute to the procedure of ‘Cryotherapy’, which is a new benchmark treatment for Welsh patients with this disease.
Annually throughout the UK, men’s prostate cancer claims 10,000 lives, with up to 32,000 new cases diagnosed each year. It is rare in people under 50, but the condition becomes more pronounced and common with age. You don’t have to go far to find someone who is affected by this type of illness.
GLAZE chairman and founder, Ray Murray, said, “ Naturally we're absolutely delighted with the generosity and effort of everyone in the Morfa Coke Ovens, because our boundaries have changed and our targets are higher, now that we are into the entirely new territory of Cryotherapy treatment – a new technique for Wales which has been developed in America for the treatment of prostate cancers.
“It means we need more income because it is an expensive process, but the upside is that it brings to Wales new hope for a condition rated to be second only to heart disease as the most life-threatening for men.”
The football match was organised by Corus employee, Ray Giles, and is just one event in many that Ray has pioneered. His dedication to the charity means that there may be more occasions where people in the business can get involved.
This great effort is a testament to the employees and contractors at Morfa Coke Ovens.
Note: (The above is an article published in the CORUS works magazine.)
Raymond Giles a former Wales Rugby Union International player and currently coach with Aberavon RFC has become a major fundraiser for GLAZE, raising in excess of £10,000 in the last two years. Thank You.

The Nude Farriers
Sun, May 15 2011 08:05
The Nude Farriers :
GLAZE, the Cowbridge-founded charity launched 12 months ago to support a new treatment for men with benign prostate conditions has completed final payments for the equipment based on Princess of Wales hospital, Bridgend – a flagship centre for dealing with the condition.
A huge contribution approaching £10,000 from South Wales Farriers, who posed near nude last year to launch a saucy 2005 calendar as a fund-raiser for GLAZE, helped the charity to complete its final hurdle – that of raising more than £125,000 to purchase its first laser machine.
“It means we have a healthy bank balance to support our next venture, which is to buy a second Green Light Laser machine for another hospital location in South Wales. Discussions with the relevant NHS Trust are in progress and we would hope to announce an agreement in the very near future.
“There is absolutely no doubt that this treatment is beneficial not only clinically but economically. It’s already helped the Urology unit at the Princess of Wales hospital to treat more than 80 men with benign prostates who needed to be hospitalised for a day only as out-patients, compared to spending 3 or 4 days in a ward under the old surgical methods.
“The cost savings inherent in the method are considerable and are a tribute to Andy Thomas and the entire team at Princess of Wales who had the foresight to pioneer laser treatment in Wales” Ray Murray added.

Football frenzy :
Another huge contribution approaching £10,000 was raised by the Football Association from the Charity Shield match between Manchester United and Arsenal. It was presented to GLAZE chairman Ray Murray, at Ninian Park last Saturday during the half-time break in the Championship match between Cardiff City and Wigan.
Clive Thomas, the former FIFA world cup referee and newly appointed high sheriff of Mid-Glamorgan, who has consented to become GLAZE patron was present, together with senior consultant urologist at Princess of Wales hospital, Andy Thomas.
Ray Murray said, “ The contribution from the FA was greatly
appreciated, all this charity work is amazing and its so great to see so many people feeling as strongly and giving as much help for GLAZE as we do”

Golf Day tees off for new prostate cancer treatment
A huge charity golf day which took place at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club raised £14,000 for ABM University NHS Trust’s prostate cancer service.
140 players and 35 teams took part in the event on 30th May. Proceeds are going towards the Trust’s new cryotherapy treatment, one of the latest ways of tackling the condition.
Cryoptherapy, introduced at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, uses a special freezing technique to destroy the prostate tumour. It was first successfully used to treat kidney tumours in Morriston patients.
The Charity Golf Day was been organised by Welsh prostate cancer charity Glaze, which has been fund-raising since 2003 for equipment to combat the disease, which is second only to heart failure as the most life-threatening condition among males.
Set up in Cowbridge, in the Vale of Glamorgan, Glaze initially supported the prostate cancer service, and green light laser equipment, at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. Now, however, it has spread its wings to support the new cryotherapy service at Morriston.
Glaze Founder Ray Murray said:
“We’re into groundbreaking territory and we intend to sustain our efforts to ensure the latest treatments are available in Wales.”
Consultant Urologist at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Andy Thomas, said
“As part of the new ABM University NHS Trust, the Princess of Wales Hospital and Morriston Hospital are working closely together as one urology team with the aim of delivering a first class service, and cryotherapy is an exciting new development.
“We were delighted to have the support of Glaze with this charity golf day, which we believe was one of the biggest events of its kind in Wales.”
The winning team was led by Swansea businessman David Richards, who is member of the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club and an ex-Welsh international player.

The winning team was led by Swansea businessman David Richards, who is member of the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club and an ex-Welsh international player.
Cardiff to Ireland

Double GLAZE lead cancer charity dash :
A sponsored cycle ride from South Wales to Galway in the Irish Republic raised vital funds for a new treatment in Wales for men’s prostate cancer.
Senior Urology Consultant at the Princess of Wales hospital, Bridgend, 41 year-old Andy Thomas will be among more than 14 cyclists taking part in the event, which starts in Narberth on March 31st.
The 300-mile round trip is being organised by former Welsh Rugby Union International, Ray Giles, now principal coach at Kenfig Hill rugby club.
A seasoned competitor of sponsored charity cycling events, Ray, once a skilled player with Cardiff and Aberavon, has raised thousands of pounds for charitable causes, including cancer research.
This year’s event will bolster funds for the cause of GLAZE Charity Trust, who initiated the Green Light Laser method now established at the Princess of Wales Hospital as a treatment centre of excellence for men with benign prostate conditions. Men are now taken in as day-care patients saving the health service thousands of hours of bed occupation for in-house surgery under old procedures.
Andy Thomas said, “I’m delighted to join Ray Giles and others in this cause which will soon bring to Wales under GLAZE stewardship CRYOTHERAPY treatment for active cancerous men’s prostate conditions. It’s a procedure which has had significant success in North America and we propose to bring it soon to Singleton hospital in Swansea where it can likewise be established as a centre for excellence.”
Andy is making serious preparations for this marathon cycle ride across West Wales and Ireland, an event that will take four days to complete. In training for the sprint Andy Thomas has lost a stone in weight and cycles back and forth each day between his home in the Vale of Glamorgan and Princess of Wales Hospital, a round trip distance of some 22 miles.
GLAZE Chairman, Ray Murray said, “ It’s this kind of enterprise on the part of Ray Giles and Andy Thomas which gives us the inspiration to bring cryogenic treatment
for prostate cancer to Wales.”
“If it follows the same success as that achieved with green light laser in Bridgend it will be a benchmark for cancer treatment in Wales,” he added.

Charity Walk :
Merthyr to Coity Castle, almost 20 miles, the last route of Owain Glydwr the first Prince of Wales and his army in the 15th. Century was recreated on the August Bank Holiday weekend 2004. Senior Urology Surgeon Andy Thomas and his operating/nursing team participated in the fundraising event along with a very weary Glaze chairman Ray Murray. It was a great effort by all those who took part raising in excess of £2,000.
