Ron's Story...

After hormone and radio therapy treatments had both failed in the quest to find a cure for his prostate cancer, Ron Griffiths believed that there was no way back and that he’d probably succumb to the disease in little over five years.

It was a bleak picture until his consultant urologist, Andy Thomas, told him about a new treatment coming to Morriston hospital, Swansea – cryotherapy.

After exploring all the alternatives, strictly limited though they were, he elected to be one of the two first patients at Morriston to have the procedure...

Rubens Story :

The man who was the first person to be treated with Bridgend’s new £100,000 green-light laser is making a good recovery at home. Reuben Matthews, aged 68, of Yr Ysfa, Maesteg, had been on the waiting list for an operation to deal with his benign prostate disease. “I have had problems for quite a few years and had Seen surgeon Andy Thomas,” he said, “But, one day, the phone rang and I was asked if I could be available to go in the next morning.”

Reuben, who worked as an engineer with the old Louis Edwards and Morris Cohen sewing factories, saw Andy Thomas, who has been leading the campaign to raise the money to buy the laser. “He explained what was involved and I agreed to go first,” said Reuben. “I stayed in the short-stay unit overnight before the treatment.”...

the Doctor" to radical prostatectomy and what came after.

Part 1.

Who's Dick?...

Beverly and I live in Llanblethian, a small "half-tidy" village adjacent to Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan. We moved here 18 years ago from Cardiff and for about half of that time we've been retired.

A Dawning...
I've been aware from general reading that there is quite a high incidence of prostate cancer with age and that it was not that uncommon as a cause of death. I'd also become aware from jokes and other such, that with age men...

Keiths Cass's Story...

I went to Cardiff straight from college to work on the industrial railways of
South Wales. I became Chairman of a railway engineering company in 1989 and subsequently a leisure company designing and building narrow gauge trains and roller coasters all of which I sold in 1999 and retired to enjoy watching my family grow up after neglecting them through their informative years, whilst I worked 7 days a week for 32 years.

My life was turned upside down in February 2006 after a series of tests starting with prostate specific antigen (PSA) test I was told that I had a Gleason score of 9, stage 4 metastatic, aggressive with hormone treatment to lower the PSA and testosterone levels being the only treatment available until it would become castrate resistent SO my cancer was descibed as incurable prostate cancer...
